SHINE Festival: Uniting St.Pete Through Art

St. Pete, Fla.-  When you live in the Tampa Bay area you become well aware of all the things that make this area awesome! For some it’s our beaches and parks, for others it’s our amazing restaurants and breweries, add some amazing art districts and off broadway theaters and you have an area that can be considered by so many “paradise”

One of the sites both tourist and locals love are the SHINE murals of Downtown St.Pete. The colorful street art become as iconic as the Skyway Bridge and the Mermaids of Weeki Wachee.

This weekend, dozens of artist from around the world will be in St.Pete for the 2018 SHINE Festival.

The Festival

Returning for its fourth year, the nine-day event kicked off on October 6 and runs through October 14. But most of the murals will be completed within the first seven days. With the excitement and a little paint in the air, and with all this amazing artistic talent all over the Burg, there are a ton of events happening around town, so definitely check your local galleries.

Here are a few we found:

Oct 12 Reveal: St Pete Streets

From 5 pm- 12 am 

REVEAL is a FREE semi-annual showcase event that highlights Station House’s multi-functional space while spotlighting St. Pete’s unique artists and local businesses. This event allows our community to witness some of the most eclectic forms of art that the Bay area has ever seen! REVEAL: St. Pete Streets aims to emphasize the experience of the arts.

In partnership with Station House, REVEAL: St. Pete Streets will also be presented by Ichicoro ANE at Station House, SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival, Mesu360 Project Gallery, and WE ARE YOUNG BLOOD.

Reveal St. Pete Streets will be highlighting Street Art with a lecture on its history from Diana Bryson, an interactive panel with those specializing in the medium, and an exhibition of local artists whose work can be seen on the streets curated by Diana Bryson. Additionally, there will be a fashion installation presented and coordinated by Mesu360 Project Gallery that you WILL NOT want to miss. Along with live music by DJ Austen van der Bleek from Open House Conspiracy, drinks, artwork, and great people!

Coast Bike Official SHINE Mural Tours – October 6 & 13

The SHINE Mural Festival is partnering with Coast Bike Share and Florida CraftArt to offer official SHINE bike tours during this year’s Festival, October 6 – 14. 

Bring your own bike or try a Coast Bike Share ride, and enjoy a relaxed, guided tour of SHINE St. Petersburg murals past and present.

Select your tour date for either a behind-the-scenes glimpse of artists creating new murals (October 6), or an in-depth look at the vibrant finished artworks (October 13). Tours will meet at the green space across the intersection diagonally from Florida CraftArt, 501 Central Ave – beside the Coast Bike Share station. Helmets are recommended.

SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival Exhibition: Finale Reception at the Morean Arts Center – October 13

5-9 pm

The SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival Finale Reception will be held Saturday, October 13 from 5-9 pm at the Morean Arts Center, 719 Central Ave. You can find our write up on their amazing Chihuly exhibit here.

Held in conjunction with the annual SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival, this exhibition features artists from this year’s festival as well as St. Petersburg’s local street artists and muralists.

The exhibition will be open to the public October 8 through October 27

See new works by Daniel “R5” Barojas, BASK, Bekky Beukes, DAAS, Angela Faustina, Illsol, J&S Signs, Jennifer Kosharek, Ya LaFord, LOOK the Weird, Cecilia Lueza, Chad Mize, Palehorse, Gibbs Rounsavall, April Seelbach, the Vitale Brothers, Justin Wagher, Zulu Painter and more. 

The show will include paintings, drawings and prints available for purchase as well as site-specific mural installations.

 

The Artists

This years contributing artist are:

Angela FaustinaAtlanta-based, Angela captures the details of juicy fruit at the height of ripeness. Her vibrant perspective into the sticky sweetness of organic produce reflects the beauty of life.

Bekky Beukes – Originally from South Africa, Bekky explores the internal and external interaction between dark and light. She’s known for emotionally-charged work that’s fueled by her fascination with internal and external chaos.
 
Belin – Spain – Miguel Ángel Belinchón Bujes, known as Belin, is a Spanish artist with a Postneocubist style. As a self-taught painter, Belin masterfully blends realism with cubism to create a uniquely modern technique reminiscent of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.
 

DAAS – A Florida artist based in Japan with a distinct geometric style, using lines and angles that echo origami folds. His bright, bold designs masterfully blend cubism and abstract techniques to create powerful human and animal images.

Gibbs Rounsavall – An abstract artist exploring perceptions of space through the relationships of line, shape, and color. His precise use of geometry creates movement, and carefully selected colors elicit memories for viewers.

Cecilia Lueza – Born in Argentina and based in St. Petersburg, her work has been shown in galleries throughout the US, South America, Spain and France. Her geometric murals inspired by nature can be found in unexpected locations, like street intersections and rooftops.

Haider Ali – Pakistan –  Pakistani painter best known for his work in the distinctive truck art style, a popular form of regional decoration in South Asia featuring elaborate floral patterns and calligraphy on vehicles.

J&S Signs – Founded in St. Petersburg in 2013 the collaboration between Jeffrey Sincich and Josh Stover is now based out of Portland, Oregon. Their familiar St. Pete murals include “You Are My Sunshine” at the Morean Arts Center and “Love Your Neighborhood” on Central Avenue.

Illsol  Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol,  husband / wife team work in Tampa under the moniker Illsol. The name “Illsol” combines “Sawyer, Krol” while referencing the spanish word for “sun” (noting Michelle’s half-Cuban heritage).
LOOK The Weird – Germany – Founding member of the internationally renowned graffiti crew, The Weird, LOOK (Lars Wunderlich) is an accomplished visual artist from Germany best known for his diverse, highly detailed graffiti-style characters. His mural and canvas work can be found throughout the world.
 
Justin Wagher – Open Call Winner a graduate of Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School, and one of the youngest working artists in the city. The content of his work focuses on the subtle aspects of life to capture familiar, often-overlooked surroundings in new ways. His style typically uses black, white and gray to convey a strong sense of emotion.
 
Matthew Hoffman –  An artist and designer based in Chicago, his public works have been exhibited internationally. He has done work for companies like Apple, Facebook and the You Are Beautiful Project.
 
Michael Vahl– Open Call Winner- A visual artist born and raised in Los Angeles, Michael Vahl specializes in one-off detailed portraiture and uniquely crafted styles of artwork that draw influences from pop art and modern culture.
 
Melanie Posner – Open Call Winner – A Fine Arts graduate from the University of Tampa, best known for painting photo-realistic women with beautiful blends of the rainbow. Her signature style uses vibrant colors and mixed media to bring an immersive and striking aspect to her work.
 
Noirs One–  Mitch Cook, Known As Noirs One, Is A Recent St. Pete Transfer By Way Of North Carolina. Best known for juxtaposing patterns found in urban environments – from the geometric and structural, to the floral and organic. His work aims to bring attention to the beauty that can exist in monotony.
 
Sarah Page – Open Call Winner With A Day Job In The Non-Profit Sector, Sarah creates Marketing Materials, Donor Communications And Supports Fundraising Efforts. She uses wood, stains and a variety of paints when creating her bold and eye-catching work.
 
Nomad Clan – England – A Collaboration Between Street Artists Cbloxx (Joy Gilleard) And AYLO (Hayley Garner). Hailing From Manchester In The United Kingdom, Nomad Clan’s dark yet playful folkloric murals have been featured across Europe, most notably on “Athena Rising,” the tallest mural in the UK.
 
Tasko – Open Call Winner Jake “Tasko” Jacquillard Is A Graffiti Writer From St. Petersburg. Having practiced his art for over 15 years, he’s best known for a unique style of lettering that explodes with color. Working with spray paint has always been his main medium.
 
Ya La’Ford  – A Professor, Painter, Installation Artist And Muralist Operating Out Of St. Petersburg, Washington, DC And New York. Her signature use of geometric lines with contrasting colors can be seen on walls and in galleries throughout the United States.

SHINES PURPOSE:

SHINE is an art project that illuminates the power of art in public spaces. Artist come from around the world to work with local artist to  revitalize areas, inspire dialogue and unite the community—while cultivating new standards of artistic excellence and reflecting St. Petersburg’s creative and vibrant spirit.

Over the past three years, 50 artful murals have been added to the landscape of the growing downtown area. SHINE continues to innovate and inspire in 2018, reflecting the region’s intensely creative spirit.

One of the best parts about this festival is what’s left behind when it’s all over!
